'Barbra and Frank' makes audiences nostalgic

Staff Report

"They'll never get together. They're just too different." That's what everyone said.

Yet in Barbra and Frank: The Concert That Never Was, Barbra Streisand and Frank Sinatra seem to put their differences aside. Tribute artists Sharon Owens and Sebastian Anzaldo capture the look and voice of the two musical idols and send the audience on a trip down memory lane.

A video of Sinatra singing "I've Got a Crush on You" starts the show and Owens sings along. It's a clever way to introduce the long-since-gone Sinatra and the still-living Streisand onto the same stage.

With a live backing band, Anzaldo and Owens fire it up with one of the Sinatra classics such as "Luck Be a Lady," and continue into separate performances interspersed with video montages of classic moments in the two's history. Owens passionately sings her solos, including the fabulous "People." A video montage of Streisand's father accompanies "Papa, Can You Hear Me?" from Yentl. Anzaldo truly captures Sinatra's mannerisms and treats the audience to classic Sinatra songs such as "My Way," "That's Life" and more. Video of Sinatra from childhood to late in life sends the audience on a nostalgic spin.

Lifestyle: The Bargain Hunter

Bargains in Vegas? While Vegas has established itself as a luxurious, lush desert oasis, there are still plenty of cost-conscious deals to keep you on budget. Here are some great ways to keep your money in your wallet, while still enjoying all the great city has to offer.

Q: My friends are coming to visit and want to see Vegas inexpensively. Where can I take them?

A: Let's be honest here ... your friends are asking you to be their own free personal tour guide. Right? And because they're your friends, that's cool. Right? So, here's what you do -- get it all done in one shot. Start your day off with a cheap but tasty breakfast. Then head over to the Fiesta for blackjack. With its betting limits as low as $3 and single- and double-deck tables, it's a great deal. Take it from us, avoid the 5-cent slots. They may look like a bargain, but they're not. Outside of Megabucks, nickel slots keep the highest percentage for the house of any slots. Translation: more money for the casino and less for you. When lunchtime rolls around, feed your friends a 75-cent hot dog from the Gold Coast. When your friends are ready for dinner, take them over to Mr. Lucky's 24/7  and order the steak-and-shrimp special. It's an off-the-menu item -- ask for it specifically. And for the finale, take them for a walk on the Strip. Be sure to catch a free showing of the Sirens of TI along the way; from what we hear, they are a dangerously beautiful bunch of women.

Q: I'm looking to do Vegas on a very limited budget.

A: You're in luck. We've got something just for you. Book your stay through us and get a great deal on your room. Scan the ads in local magazines and you'll find a number of coupons to ease the cost of your Vegas vacation. For dining, check out our dining bargains list. If you don't mind being on the hotel's mailing list, sign up for any of the slot clubs. The hotel usually provides you with a free tchotchke just for signing up, and if you use your card while playing, you earn points toward other freebies. For your nighttime adventures, check out some of the great free lounge shows in Vegas.

Q: Are there any inexpensive (or free) shows in Vegas?

A: Vegas is all about giving things away. When you're in Vegas, check out some of the great free lounge shows, then head over to the Carnaval Court at Harrah's for live music all day long or check out one of these many free shows and attractions. Also, make a visit to the Grand Canal Shoppes at the Venetian and watch the Living Statues do their thing. If you want a photo with the statues, politely tug on their clothing, tell 'em you're a friend of ours and then snap your photo. Oh, and don't forget to do the customary Vegas thing, tip those statues a dollar -- it's how they make a living.

Q: What are the best buffet deals in town?

A: If you're looking for cheap, check out the Circus Buffet at Circus Circus. If you want something more middle of the road, hit the buffets  at any of the Station Casinos. We also hear Garden Court Buffet at Main Street Station has good food for very little cash.

Q: What free (or almost free) things can I do with the kids?

A: So, the kids want to have fun, too? Don't fret. There's a reason they say Vegas has something for everyone. Here are a few free options: the Midway Circus Act at Circus Circus, the Lion Habitat at MGM Grand and the fountain shows and aquarium at the Forum Shops at Caesars. If you're still itchin' for more options, check out our list of free attractions.

Q: Can you share any additional ways to save a buck or two while in Vegas?

A: So you haven't hit the jackpot yet and you're looking to save a few bucks on expenses to cover your next bet at the tables. Worry not, we're here to help.

  • Don't valet your car. While valet parking is free at hotels, it is expected that you tip the valet attendant. Save a few bucks and walk off that buffet dinner, park your own car in the free garage or lot.
  • Don't order room service. We know, it sounds tempting, but room service includes all kinds of additional charges and fees, and you need to tip the room service attendant. Our suggestion: get out of bed and find an affordable 24-hour coffee shop.
  • Skip the soft drinks and the bottled water at restaurants. With soda costing as much as $4 a glass, and bottled water (think Evian or Voss) even more, your drinks can cost as much as half your meal. Even if the waiter is trying to talk you into bottled water, just order ice water.
  • Don't get gas on the Strip. While those conveniently located gas stations are great, take a few extra minutes to drive east or west to get cheaper gas. With today's gas prices, you will be happy you did.
  • Order wine by the bottle. If two or more people are drinking wine and can settle on the type of grape that you like, you can save some money by ordering a bottle.
  • Don't buy sundries in the hotel gift shop. Unless it's an aspirin/Band-Aid emergency, find the closest CVS or Walgreens pharmacy (there are several on the Strip) and pick up Vegas souvenirs at great prices while you are there.

Q: I'm coming to Vegas in my RV, is there anywhere on the Strip I can hook up?

A: Hooking up on the Vegas Strip is easier than imagined. We hear that Circus Circus' Circusland RV Park offers 399 spaces with full-service utility hookups.

Q: What are comps and how can I get them?

A: Comps are all about who you know. Comps are any sort of free stuff given out by casino management. They can include meals, show tickets, rooms and VIP treatment such as getting you into a sold-out show or getting you a room on a sold-out weekend. Comps are based on the amount of time you spend gambling and the rate at which you bet and/or win. Signing up for slot cards will help you get comps -- usually you'll get something just for signing up. At the tables you can ask the pit boss to "rate" you or keep track of your betting so you can receive comps.

Q: Where can I find the best drink prices?

A: So you want to get buzzed at a cheap price? If beer's your drink of choice, check out the one-armed bandits at Slots-A-Fun; they offer several types of beer for $1. Some restaurants offer happy hour specials like 2 for 1 drinks. Ladies can catch a break on drinks at many of the clubs in Vegas -- a number offer ladies' night where women drink free before 11 p.m. Of course, every casino offers free drinks while you gamble, but avoid the nickel and penny slot areas where drink service can be spotty. For other drink specials, check out our list of drinks.

Lifestyle: The People Watcher

So you've heard that Vegas is a great place to see celebs and other beautiful people. Well, you've heard right. Here are a few places you can go to and watch all the action.

Q: I'm addicted to celebrity gossip and would love to see some stars while in Vegas. Where's the best place to observe them?

A: When looking for Hollywood's elite first pick the most obvious choice, the celebrity-owned Planet Hollywood. Not only is the hotel and casino the set for filming movies, but the 1,500-seat showroom upstairs is sometimes used to premier motion pictures. Downstairs the Extra Lounge is the Las Vegas headquarters for the correspondents and crew of television’s “Extra.”

Next stop would be to park yourself in the patio dining area of Spago at the Forum Shops. Celebs love to shop and they love to do it at this extravagant mall.

If you're more in the mood for clubbing, check out Pure at Caesars Palace. It's a virtual celebrity playground every weekend. Tao at the Venetian and LAX at the Luxor are also hot spots for the celeb crowd. If you're looking to spot a celebrity in a restaurant, try N9NE at the Palms or Nobu at the Hard Rock. Those two hotels are where you'll have the most success in stargazing. Quite a few famous folks have also been spotted enjoying the sushi at Social House at Treasure Island.

Whenever there's a major boxing match or awards show, you can't turn around without seeing a celebrity.

Poker is one of the hottest games in town right now, and celebrities like to play as much as the rest of us. Lately, there have been celebrity poker tournaments all over town, so if you're lucky enough to catch one, you'll definitely spot someone famous.

Vegas is convention central, and some of the big shows attract the big stars. MAGIC and ShoWest are two that are attended by a lot of Hollywood's heavy hitters. Finally, don't miss the annual CineVegas film festival. Jack Nicholson, Nicolas Cage and Dustin Hoffman are just a few of the actors who have shown up for the party.

If it's a show you want to see, the celebs seem to flock to Cirque du Soleil's Beatles extravaganza LOVE at the Mirage.

And if all else fails, we have just one word for you: Palms.

Q: Vegas seems so glamorous. Where do the young, beautiful people hang out?

A: If you want to see the young kids having a grand time in Vegas, head over to the Hard Rock Hotel. If they're not seeing a show at The Joint, they're partying at Body English. During the summer, the Hard Rock's pool area turns into Rehab, one of the most sizzling club scenes around. Another happening place is the Palms. Head up to ghostbar or Moon and check out the view of Vegas along with the view of the beautiful people. Tabú at the MGM Grand is another chic nightspot where you'll find a very well-heeled crowd. If you're looking for a place where the beautiful people hang out, this is it.

Q: Where's a more casual spot to watch all of the crazy party people that come to Vegas?

A: Well, apart from all of the clubs, high-end restaurants and upscale shopping there are some other fun places in Vegas where you can entertain yourself with some good old-fashioned people watching, accompanied by a few drinks of course. Head over to Stripburger in front of the Fashion Show Mall. It's the only all-outdoor restaurant on the Strip where you can get a bite to eat or enjoy a cocktail while still having a view of all the action.

Carnaval Court outside of Harrah's is a great place to let loose and check out the smorgasbord of people that flock to this party pit almost every night of the week. They have a huge circle bar with flair bartenders and live music on the weekends where you can delight in the revelry of the crowd and the yard-long mixed drinks. Margaritaville at the Flamingo also has a balcony overlooking the Strip.

And then, for some serious people watching, there are always the trams and monorails. At the expense of sounding like a total stalker, just about everyone rides those at some point or another.

If you really want to see some hardcore Vegas tourists head down to the Fremont Street Experience where you will find old Vegas casinos and a multitude of wacky, tacky souvenir shops all under a canopy of neon lights. You never know who or what you are going see downtown, but is it definitely worth the trip to get a taste of some of the hotels that first put Vegas on the map -- or at least the 99-cent shrimp cocktail. While you're down there, check out Gold Diggers at the Golden Nugget, which has a balcony overlooking the whole street.

How do I get around town?

Transfers
Transfers are not included with your vacation package. However, shared van, private limo transfers, and rental cars are available for purchase. Pre-purchasing a shared ride or private limo transfer will save you time and money upon arrival in Las Vegas. McCarran International Airport is located approximately one mile from the Strip and eight miles from downtown.

Taxi
Las Vegas is filled with taxi cabs, and for good reason. It is a fast and efficient way to get around town. Just be sure to be savvy about your way around. Tell the driver to go the fastest way. The drivers are paid for time, not mileage, and The Strip is not usually the fastest way. Also, it is not necessary to take the interstate from the airport, taking the interstate will most likely result in a much higher fare. Taxi lines can be quite long during peak arrival/departure times at the airport and most evenings at major casino resorts.

Car
A rental car can be a convenient method of transportation to travel between resorts, if you are planning to leave the Strip, or if you are staying downtown or in the resort collection properties. Almost all casinos offer large parking garages and complimentary valet parking.

Walking
The Strip is easily navigated on foot, and elevated trams and monorails connect many of the most popular casinos such as Bally’s and MGM, Bellagio and Monte Carlo, The Mirage and TI-Treasure Island, and Mandalay Bay and Excalibur with a stop at the Luxor. Pedestrian bridges can also be found connecting the MGM Grand and New York - New York and Excalibur, Bellagio and Bally’s, and Caesars Palace and the Flamingo.

Bus
A fast, cheap, and safe way to navigate Las Vegas is the bus. With convenient stops and minimal charge, you’ll be left with more coins in your pocket. The ride between downtown and the Strip is only $2.

Monorail
This public transit system connects the MGM Grand on the south end of The Strip with the Sahara and the Convention Center on the north end. Stops are made at Bally’s/Paris, the Flamingo Las Vegas, the Imperial Palace, the Convention Center, and the Las Vegas Hilton. One way fares, daily, and multi-day passes are offered.

What kinds of dining and nightlife are available?

Eating out in Las Vegas can be at a buffet, a celebrity chef restaurant, a great steakhouse, or at someplace with a great view to match the great food. Here are some recommendations:

Best Buffet
They're unending and delicious. Try the Carnival Buffet at the Rio or the Spice Market Buffet at Planet Hollywood.

Best Views
If someone is looking to "pop the question" these restaurants are the perfect backdrop. Try the Center Stage Restaurant at the Plaza for great views of the Fremont Street Experience. The Top of the World restaurant at the Stratosphere has breathtaking views of the entire Strip. And 11 stories up is the Eiffel Tower French restaurant at Paris-Las Vegas with fabulous views of the fountains at Bellagio.

Steakhouses
Nothing beats a great steak and these temples to beef will not dissppoint. Two of the best in Las Vegas are the SW Steakhouse at the Wynn and Prime at Bellagio.

Italian
Everyone loves Italian food and Rao at Caesars and Il Fornaio at New York-New York are some of the best.

French
For the perfect combination of butter and cream, head to Andre's at the Monte Carlo or Mon Ami Gabi, with al fresco dining along the Strip at Paris.

Wine
Hands down, Aureloe at the Mandalay Bay with its four-story wall of wine, will impress any oenophile.

Celebrity Chefs
Celebrity chefs abound in the new gourmet Las Vegas. Some favorites are Michael Mina at Bellagio, Emeril's at MGM Grand, and Wolfgang Puck's Spago at Caesars.

In the Know
For those in the know and looking for a great meal at a reasonable price, head to Hugo's Cellar at the Four Queens. The steaks are great and all the ladies receive a rose.

Las Vegas has always been a party town. The nightlife starts early and ends early, in the morning that is. Here’s our pick for how to make the most of the fun. And remember, to get the most fun out of a Las Vegas night, opt for Vegas-Passport Ultimate Nightclub Hopping Package that gets you access to the VIP line and free cover at more than 25 of Las Vegas' hottest nightclubs.

Double Your Fun
Head out to a hotel that has two hot nightclubs to double your fun. Try the hot Tabu or the still-famous Studio 54 at MGM Grand. There's also Tryst and Lure at Wynn Las Vegas.

3-in-1
Experience multiple clubs within one club. Jet at the Mirage has three separate dance floors or Pure at Caesars has three separate areas with different types of music.

Heart-Stopping Views
Your pulse — and the party — will get going at the Voodoo Lounge on the 51st floor of the Rio. On Mondays, try the Foundation Room at the Mandalay Bay.

New
Try some new clubs like Polly Esther's at Stratosphere or the Canyon Club at the Four Queens.

Something Different
Take in a burlesque show at Tangerine at TI or Forty Deuce at Mandalay Bay.

Tipping does help! Being generous with your cash will help you get in to some of the more popular clubs.

Insider tips on gaming

Here are some insider tips on gaming in Las Vegas:

Downtown
The odds are better in downtown with a 98% payout. For your best bet at winning, play blackjack, slots, or wager on sports.

The Strip
The best odds on the Strip are at the Stratosphere and the Riviera.

Local Play
The locals usually play at the off-Strip hotels.

Poker
All casinos will have poker, but for real fun, play at the Rio where the World Series of Poker is played.

High Stakes
For high-wager gaming, the Bellagio and Wynn are the places to be — and be seen.

When are the local events?

It's hard to outdo the normal, nonstop party that is Las Vegas, but some events stand out above all others.

Superbowl
January or February. Las Vegas is abuzz with activity and parties are going nonstop for the NFLs championship game.

St. Patrick’s Day
March. Pack your green and take part in the festivities and enjoy the parade.

NASCAR
March. NASCAR comes to Las Vegas in early march.

National Finals Rodeo
December. The finest rodeo cowboys in the world descend on Las Vegas for a chance to win a tea-platter-sized National Champion belt buckle.

New Years Eve
December 31. The Las Vegas casinos pull out all the stops to make your New Years Eve one to remember…if you can.

Travel tidbits

Best Burger in Vegas
Food and Wine picked the Burger Bar Las Vegas in Mandalay Place as the best burger joint in town. Star chef Hubert Keller’s menu features a variety of freshly ground burgers, including turkey, lamb, and beef. And almost all (except the Kobe beef) are priced under $10. And if you need fries with your burger, Anthony Bourdain of the Discovery Channel's show "No Reservations" raved about the frites at Bouchon.

Late Night Munchies
Las Vegas is a 24-hour city, and so it is nice to know that if you need food at any time of the day or night you can head to Pink’s Hot Dogs, the brand new branch of the L.A. original. Located at 3667 Las Vegas Blvd. South, between the Aladdin and Paris.

Coffee Lovers
If you need to have a cup before you even set foot out of your hotel room, you'd better bring your own pot. Strip resorts don't put coffee makers in the rooms! Most hotels now have many coffee shops for caffine lovers.

No Phones
Don't bring your cell phone to the race and sports books. They are prohibited.

Tipping Made Simple
To estimate a 15% tip for your restaurant check, simply double the city's 7.75% sales tax show on your bill.

Concerts on the Beach
The Mandalay Bay has a Concert on the Beach series which takes place right beside the Beach Casino. Ticket prices range from $40-$55 for advance purchase prices, a bargain at half the price of other headliners.

Arts District
Located halfway between downtown and the Strip is a new and evolving arts district with antique shops, galleries, bistros, and funky bars. Also, on every first Friday of the month, galleries open their doors, bands perform, and performers stroll the streets.

Nightlife
1) Plan ahead. If you know there is a certain nightclub that you want to spend your time in, book a room in the resort in which it’s located. If you call the club and tell them that you’re a guest in the hotel, it could help you bypass the long access lines that can easily reach 45 minutes. 2) Act like you belong. Don’t be afraid to tip the doorman $20 etc. 3) Dress the part. If you don’t fit in, you won’t get in. 4) Travel in groups. Six people is ideal for bottle service and for women, traveling in a group without men gets you more favorable service. 5) Reserve a table with bottle service. It can help you get in to the most popular clubs.
